The playmaker was on holiday on his home-island of Reunion, but his break has been marred after an act of madness.

The France international was ‘flashed’ by a speed camera driving at 105 miles per hour in a 55mph-to-68mph zone on a four-lane road, according to L’Equipe.

Payet’s German saloon was also taken by police, while the player himself will have to face a police tribunal in September.

As noted by the French source, the island has a poor reputation for road safety—with 705 accidents in 2014 alone, leading to 49 deaths and 773 injuries.

Things are getting worse as well, with the above statistics representing a 26 percent increase on 2013.

The news will come as an unwanted distraction for Payet and West Ham, who have cultivated a positive atmosphere at the club after swapping Sam Allardyce for Slaven Bilic in the summer.

The new coach has also signed Pedro Obiang [The Guardian], while the likes of Angelo Ogbonna [ESPN], Mattia Destro [Express], Alex Song [Metro], Yohan Cabaye [Express] and Loic Remy [Daily Mail] have all been linked with a move to Upton Park this summer.
