Liverpool and Tottenham have both been linked to the 28-year-old, who struggled for regular game time last season. The midfielder made 33 appearances, but 11 of them came from the bench as the Rojiblancos came third in La Liga and got to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

However, this lack of playing time hasn’t put off the Premier League pair. £8.5 million may be enough to sign the Spain international, who was also a bit-part player when Atleti won La Liga and got to the final of the Champions League in the 2013-14 season. They will have to beat off competition from Inter Milan to get the former Mallorca ace’s signature though.

“We’re waiting to speak to Inter and Atletico Madrid,” Quillon said,

“At the moment we’re still waiting. We have another offer. Is it Milan? No, I’m talking about a club in the Premier League.”

Spurs are in need of a central midfielder after having to rely on the relatively untested Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason during the last campaign. Although the youthful duo performed well, a step up in experience and quality may be needed if manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to break in to the top four.

Meanwhile the Merseyside outfit may be on the lookout for a player who can at least partially replace Anfield legend Steven Gerrard. Having already signed James Milner, who can operate centrally going forward, the Vicente Calderon star may be able to add the defensive work that Gerrard put in in his latter years.
