The White Hart Lane side are already hot on the heels of defender Toby Alderweireld, which has led to Southampton threatening to sue the La Liga side [via BBC Sport], and now Mauricio Pochettino has taken a liking for the Spanish defensive midfielder.

Last term, Pochettino elected to use Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb as his main options in the centre of the park and having sold both Paulinho and Etienne Capoue there is certainly scope for an addition to boost his complement of midfielders.

28-year-old Suarez moved to Atletico Madrid in 2010 and after initially being a virtual ever present the Spanish international has become a less prominent member of Diego Simeone’s first team set-up over the past two campaigns.

Suarez made just 11 La Liga starts last term but given that Atletico Madrid have sold Arda Turan to Barcelona they may not be keen on losing another first team squad member this summer.

The tough tackling midfielder came through the Atletico Madrid ranks before moving to Real Mallorca in 2008 before returning to the Spanish capital two years later.

Suarez first broke onto the scene as part of Spain’s winning side at the 2006 European Under 19 Championship as part of a side that also included Gerard Pique and Juan Mata.
