White Hart Lane boss Mauricio Pochettino has been hard at work trimming his expansive squad and will look to lure 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international McCarthy to North London.

Spurs failed to secure a coveted top four spot in 2014/15 and the Daily Mirror claims Pochettino wants to improve on his current central midfield options and McCarthy has certainly done enough during his two seasons at Goodison Park to suggest he’d be the right man for the job.

Pochettino used Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb as his first choice options in the centre of the park last season and has already sold Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Lewis Holtby, to Guangzhou Evergrande, Hamburg and Watford respectively, clearing the way for new midfield addition.

A move to bring in McCarthy would help act as a steely industrious presence to help offer Tottenham’s leaky defence some much needed back-up.

Tottenham conceded more goals than any side in the top-half of the Premier League table in 2014/15.

Tottenham will offer wide-man Aaron Lennon as part of a deal for McCarthy, the long-serving winger having spent time on loan at the Toffees last season, though Roberto Martinez would be loathed to lose the former Wigan Athletic man.

Everton paid £13m for McCarthy in September 2013 (via the Daily Mirror) and the battling midfielder has made 76 appearances in his two campaigns on Merseyside.
