Manchester United look to be closing in on the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer after the Bavarian giants’ chief executive confirmed the player’s departure.

The 30-year-old has spent his entire career with Bayern up until now, but is reportedly keen on a new challenge, according to German broadcaster DW Sports and by the club’s official English-language Twitter account.

This will certainly go down as an exciting signing for United, with the Daily Telegraph just one of many sources suggesting that the German international will be heading to England this summer after recent developments.

Schweinsteiger has made 500 appearances for the current Bundesliga champions, winning eight titles in a glorious career that also saw him play a key role in their treble-winning year of 2012/13.

On the international stage, Schweinsteiger has also shone with 111 caps and a World Cup win for his country, and there’s no doubt he has the ability to give United exactly what they’ve been missing in midfield since the retirement of Paul Scholes.

This crafty and intelligent midfielder can play in a variety of roles but should come in as the team’s main creative hub under Louis van Gaal, who has seemingly been left unconvinced by the likes of Ander Herrera in that position.

Incredibly, Schweinsteiger will become the first ever German player to play a competitive match for United.

UPDATE: Man United themselves have now confirmed the deal via their official Twitter page…
