In that event, van Gaal would have to switch his transfer targets, and could re-ignite his interest in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, who is also attracting interest from fierce rivals Liverpool [via Metro Sport].
The Belgian international has a £32.5million release clause in his contract, and Telegraph Sport claimed over the weekend that a big-money offer was being prepared by the Red Devils.
