Manchester United potentially stuck with wantaway star after pricing himself out of move (Twitter)

Manchester United may end up being stuck with Victor Valdes after he priced himself out of a move to Valencia, reports the Daily Mail.

The Liga BBVA outfit were interested in signing the experienced stopper, but may now be unable to, and have turned their attentions to Club Brugge goalie Mat Ryan in response. The Australia international impressed at the World Cup last summer and likely be a cheaper option than the Spanish veteran.

This could be a problem for the Red Devils after a very public falling out between the player and manager Louis van Gaal. The 63-year-old revealed on Wednesday that the former Barcelona ace is for sale after refusing to play in the reserves [BBC]. With David De Gea taking the number one spot at Old Trafford there are no other opportunities for game time.

“He doesn’t follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that,” van Gaal said.

“Last year, he refused to play in the second team and there are other aspects you need as a keeper at United.

“When you are not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out. It is a big disappointment. It is a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate, gave him a contract and then he is fit to play.”

However, Valdes refuted these claims on social media.

The 33-year-old posted a picture on Instagram with pictures of several games he played in the reserves, as well as the tagline “…? #respect”.

This appears to put van Gaal’s claims in to doubt, and at least indicates a disagreement between the two men.

To complicate this situation United are also in danger of losing fellow ‘keeper De Gea to Real Madrid [Manchester Evening News]. They may still have a season with the 24-year-old, whose contract ends in a year, between the sticks [Independent], but finding a new goalie is surely still high in van Gaal’s priorities.

Valdes could have been a ready-made replacement for the former Atletico Madrid man, but with this falling out it could mean the Red Devils need new first and second choice ‘keepers. Moreover, they could also be stuck with a disgruntled Valdes who isn’t interested in playing.
