Brendan Rodgers picked a strong team for the contest, with a potentially first-choice midfield three of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Lucas Leiva given the opportunity to build a rapport.

In attack, the trio of Danny Ings, Divock Origini and Adam Lallana—all of whom may be backups for the coming campaign, considering the presence of Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho and potential new recruit Christian Benteke [BBC]—were given the chance to impress.

It was the last of these three, Lallana, who save the Reds’ blushes after Rodgers’s travelling team fell behind to a fine Dimitri Petratos effort.

The England international was picked out by a delicious James Milner pass, before flummoxing the defender with some fine footwork and sending a delicious curling shot past the Roar stopper.

Neither side scored again during a well-contested first half, meaning that there is still everything to play for during the second 45-minute spell.
