Tottenham Hotspur star on brink of transfer exit as Mauricio Pochettino continues massive summer clear-out

Mauricio Pochettino’s mission to rid Tottenham Hotspur of the dead wood in the squad is continuing apace, with Vlad Chiriches the latest Spurs flop heading for the exit door.

The Romania defender appears to be close to a move to Serie A side Fiorentina, with Sky Italia [via talkSPORT] reporting that the Viola have opened talks with the player.

The Argentine coach has not been afraid to shed the unwanted figures in the Lilywhites’ squad this summer, and the likes of Etienne Capoue, Benjamin Stambouli, Paulinho and Younes Kaboul have all already left the club, joining Watford, Paris Saint-Germain, Guangzhou Evergrande and Sunderland respectively.

The next player set for the exit door appears likely to be 25-year-old Chiriches, who managed only eight outings in the Premier League last term.

The centre-back—who has regularly been called upon to play as a right-back during his Tottenham career—was tipped for the exit door in January, with AS Roma interested, only to remain at the club [Metro].

However, he finally looks set to end his nightmarish White Hart Lane spell, with talkSPORT noting that Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa is a big fan of the former Steaua Bucharest man.

One potential hold-up for the deal may be whether Chiriches moves on loan or permanently; the Italian side are keen on a temporary move—for now at least—while Spurs are keen to offload the player completely.

Amidst the exodus from north London, Pochettino has also made considerable defensive reinforcements, bringing Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld to the club.
