Besiktas eye surprise move to sign Arsenal outcast in £8m deal

Gunners flop linked with Turkey move.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has emerged as a surprise target for Besiktas this summer, with the club described as ‘confident’ of signing him for around £8m, according to the Daily Express.

The England international has struggled at the Emirates Stadium since his deadline day move from Manchester United last summer, scoring only eight goals in his first season in north London.

Welbeck showed some flashes of brilliance with a hat-trick against Galatasaray and the winning goal against his old club in an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford, but overall did not contribute enough to the team as they lacked a top class finisher up front.

The Express now claims Arsenal are looking at bringing in Real Madrid star Karim Benzema this summer, and there’s no doubt that the arrival of the Frenchman would put Welbeck’s first-team hopes in serious doubt, with the 24-year-old already finding himself in and out of the side last season due to the presence of Olivier Giroud up top.

Welbeck was also used in an unfamiliar wide role for Arsene Wenger’s side, suggesting the manager does not trust him as a centre-forward and that he could become surplus to requirements this summer if a good enough offer comes in.

The Express add that Besiktas are looking for a replacement for former Chelsea man Demba Ba up front, with the Arsenal flop emerging as a realistic target.
