Contract signed: Arsenal seal deal for 19-goal striker, another could be brought in

Gunners conclude talks for striker.

Arsenal have sealed a deal to tie key striker Olivier Giroud down to a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, with the player comitting himself to the club until 2018, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 28-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer for the Gunners in recent times, with 19 goals in all competitions last season as he enjoyed what many felt was his most impressive campaign for the club.

Although Giroud has divided opinion during his time in the Premier League, with the Frenchman developing a reputation for missing simple chances and going missing in the big games, he has also shown some moments of real quality and class, as well as netting 58 times in 134 appearances.

Despite the Mirror’s report that he has now signed a new long-term contract, it is also claimed that Arsenal will be in the market for another striker in this summer’s transfer window, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both mentioned as the most likely candidates to come in.

It seems fairly clear that either of those would be an upgrade on Giroud, though it’s clear the former Montpellier man has his place in this squad as a backup player or super-sub option, which could be a good move for Arsenal as they try to challenge for perhaps three major honours next season.
