Recently-axed Liverpool defender on the verge of move to Euro giants; set for medical on Friday

Javier Manquillo, who spent last season on loan at Liverpool, is on the brink of completing another temporary move, this time to Olympique de Marseille.

The right-back originally moved to Anfield in the summer of 2014 on a two-year loan deal, but his spell on Merseyside was ended prematurely this month, with Brendan Rodgers seemingly seeing no future for the Atletico Madrid man at the club [The Guardian].

The defender managed only 10 league appearances at Liverpool, supplementing that with five outings in Europe and two each in the League Cup and FA Cup.

He moved to Atletico in 2007 after beginning his career with Real, and progressed through the Colchoneros’ B team before being promoted to Diego Simeone’s first-team squad. He managed only six appearances across the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, and looks no closer to making the grade at the Vicente Calderon.

According to L’Equipe, Marcelo Bielsa is preparing to finalise the ex-Spain U21 international’s temporary move to Marseille.

The French source report that the defender will be moving initially on loan, but with the opportunity for a permanent transfer.

The full-back is set to complete his medical on Friday, with OM having apparently beaten off competition from Olympique Lyonnais to sign the defender, according to the French sports daily, while Girondins de Bordeaux were also understood to be considering the defender [L’Equipe].
