Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has refused to deny that the club are making a move for Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, reports the Daily Star.

There have been rumours that the Red Devils are preparing a British record move for the 30-year-old, and this will only add fuel to the fire. With Angel Di Maria possibly moving to PSG [Daily Mirror] it could be that the Portuguese is seen as a replacement for the 27-year-old, who also joined United from the Bernabeu.

It would be an emotional return to the club where he made his name for Ronaldo if he were to complete a move to Old Trafford. The forward netted 118 goals in 292 appearances for the Premier League side between 2003 and 2009. He has since gone on to win two Ballon d’Ors and break various scoring records with Los Merengues, but would be welcomed with open arms by his former side.

“Ronaldo to United? I never answer the question because I cannot answer the question,” van Gaal said, “I want to, but it is not good for Manchester United, it is not good for the player and it is not good for me.

“Every word that I spend for players who are in the process is one word too much. I have read about a lot of interesting players that Manchester United would buy, but it is not with every player true.

“But, I can not say that.”

Were the Portuguese to join United it could vastly boost their chances of success next season. With the Champions League and heightened expectations in the Premier League to deal with, they will certainly need some help to continue their progression under van Gaal.
