Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s competitive debut for Manchester United hinges on whether he can prove his fitness in the club’s next pre-season fixture.

The Germany national team captain sat out the Red Devils’ 3-1 win over La Liga giants Barcelona on Saturday night after picking up an injury in training in the build up to the clash in the United States.

He watched on the from the sidelines as his new teammates recorded an impressive victory over last season’s La Liga, Copa Del Rey and Champions League winners thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj.

United are next in action against reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and Mirror Sport understands Schweinsteiger must figure for at least 30 minutes in that game to be considered for selection against Tottenham on the opening day of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League campaign.

With fellow summer signing Morgan Schneiderlin forging a decent understanding with Michael Carrick in United’s midfield during pre-season, Schweinsteiger will be desperate to prove his fitness and give manager Louis van Gaal a selection dilemma for the game against Spurs on August 8.
