Serie A star and Liverpool transfer target Mario Gomez set for £5.6m transfer to Besiktas

Liverpool‘s hopes of signing experienced German striker Mario Gomez has taken a major blow as Turkish outfit Beskitas are reportedly closing in on the player’s signature.

The Fiorentina forward has been heavily linked with a shock move to Anfield during the current transfer window as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.

The Reds have been extremely busy in the transfer market so far this summer and have already recruited two new centre-forwards in Christian Benteke and Danny Ings, while Brazilian playmaker Roberto Firmino can also lead the line after doing so for the national side during the 2015 Copa America tournament.

However, reports in Italy [via Mirror Sport] claim Gomez is close to joining last season’s third-placed team in Super Lig in a deal worth £5.6million and that is likely to end speculation of a transfer to Merseyside.

With Besiktas set to sign the former Bayern Munich star on a two-year deal, that could end their interest in Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, who has been linked with a move to Turkey over the weekend.
