Manchester City are poised to launch an opening bid of £40million in an attempt to land highly-rated Vfl Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne, Telegraph Sport reports.

The Belgian international was back in England over the weekend as the Bundesliga outfit participated in the Emirates Cup competition alongside Arsenal, Lyon and Villarreal.

It’s understood that City Director of football Txiki Begiristain spent the weekend holding talks with the former Chelsea midfielder’s agent Patrick De Koster in London and is prepared to hand Germany’s Player of the Year a long-term contract worth up to £180,000-a-week to make a return to the Barclays Premier League.

A bid of £40million is unlikely to be enough to convince Wolfsburg into selling their prized asset as they reportedly value the 24-year-old at £57million, meaning City will have to break their transfer record in order to bring the playmaker to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
