Ex-Liverpool & Arsenal transfer target at Premier League side for medical

Stoke City are on the verge of completing another summer signing with Ibrahim Afellay currently undergoing a medical with Mark Hughes’s side.

The Dutch international was released by Barcelona this summer after spending four and a half years with the Catalonian heavyweights. Despite arriving at the Nou Camp as one of the most talented players in the Eredivisie, the PSV Eindhoven man struggled to impress.

He featured 16 times in La Liga during his first campaign, scoring once, but since 2011, he has only managed five league outings for Barca.

The forward struggled for first-team opportunities and spent time on loan at both Schalke 04 and Olympiakos. Last season, he scored four goals in 19 league outings for the Greek giants, winning the Super League title.

According to Sky Sports, the wideman is on the brink of agreeing a move to Stoke, and is currently in Staffordshire for a medical with Mark Hughes’s side.

Should 29-year-old Afellay complete a move to the Britannia Stadium, he will join a growing list of Barcelona alumni, with Marc Muniesa and Bojan Krkic having previously featured for the Blaugrana.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal were reportedly keen on the forward last summer [via talkSPORT], but Afellay’s struggles at Barcelona mean that the two EPL giants appear to have lost interest in the Netherlands attacker.
