According to reports in L’Equipe [via Star Sport], the Reds are still on the trail of the highly-rated Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette, who topped last season’s Ligue 1 scoring charts with 27 goals in just 33 appearances.
The Merseyside outfit have been extremely active in the transfer market this summer and have already heavily bolstered their attacking options with the signings of Benteke, Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino, who is capable of leading the line as he did for the Brazil national team during the 2015 Copa America tournament.
Despite increasing the goalscoring threat at Anfield, Rodgers is reportedly lining up a £21.7 million bid for Lacazette, however, that offer is likely to be rejected by the French club as president Jean Michel Aulas has already stated that the 24-year-old will cost at least £35 million [via Independent Sport].
If reports of a bid for the Frenchman are true then it could raise doubts over the future of Daniel Sturridge, who is set to miss the start of the season after undergoing hip surgery towards the end of last term [via Independent Sport].
The England international missed the majority of the 2014/15 campaign with numerous injuries, and his place in Rodgers’s strongest XI is already under threat following the arrival of Benteke on Merseyside and should Lacazette arrive, it could result in the former Chelsea and Manchester City forward being reduced to the coach’s third-choice striker.
