Serie A new boys ready to bring Liverpool flop Mario Balotelli back to Italy

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli could be offered a chance to resurrect his career with newly-promoted Serie A outfit Bologna, according to Guardian Sport.

The Italian joined the Anfield outfit from AC Milan last summer in a deal worth a reported £16 million [via BBC Sport], but failed to impress throughout the season and found the back of the net just once in the league. He now faces a huge battle to force his way into manager Brendan Rodgers’s plans for the new campaign.

The Reds have been extremely active in the transfer window so far this summer and the attacking options at the club have been bolstered by the arrivals of Christian Benteke and Danny Ings, while Brazilian international Roberto Firmino is also a viable option to lead the line as he has done so for the national team in the past.

Balotelli’s future with the Reds had been called into question after being left out of the squad which travelled to the Far East and Australia for the club’s pre-season tour earlier in the summer [via Express Sport].

With the European Championships on the horizon next summer, Balotelli needs to be playing regularly if he is to have any chance at being included in the Italy squad and he has emerged as a transfer target for Bologna following comments from the club’s director of sport Pantaleo Corvino: “Of course, Bologna have to respect certain financial parameters, but for the right price I would even look at the possibility of buying him outright.”

Sampdoria are also reportedly interested in luring the former Manchester City man back to Italy.

However, Balotelli is running out of chances to finally fulfil his enormous potential; at the age of 24 he has already failed to impress at four of the biggest clubs in European football and is yet to show he can produce consistent performances week in and week out.
