There has been talk of a £17 million bid for the midfielder, who could the Reds’ seventh signing after James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino, and Christian Benteke. The France international can dominate the middle of the park in a similar manner to Anfield legend Steven Gerrard, who left the club for LA Galaxy earlier in the summer.
Their Stamford Bridge rivals are also keen on the 25-year-old though, and also have the draw of Champions League football. The Blues won both the Premier League and the Capital One Cup with Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic in central midfield last time round, but could do with more depth in the area if they are going to improve on their last 16 finish in Europe’s premier club competition.
However, it could be difficult to entice the France international away from St. James’ Park, with the player likely to want first team football wherever he goes. With the European Championships starting in less than 12 months, it will be vital to make sure he can get in to his country’s squad.
