Arsenal to break transfer record for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, £45.8m set aside for deal

Arsenal could break their transfer record to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this summer, having set aside £45.8m for the potential deal, according to Spanish publication AS.

The Gunners have been linked several times with the French international forward in recent times, with the Daily Telegraph recently claiming that they saw a bid rejected for the player.

Still, Arsenal seem ready to go higher and bring Benzema to the Emirates Stadium in an exciting move, with this signing potentially breaking the club’s transfer record for biggest fee paid, which is currently said to be around £42.4m (via BBC Sport), which brought Mesut Ozil to north London from Madrid back in 2013.

In another piece, AS suggests possible replacements for the 27-year-old if he does leave, with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero perhaps the biggest name on the list, plus a potential move to re-sign Alvaro Morata from Juventus.

For Arsenal fans, this would represent another hugely ambitious piece of business after recent marquee signings of players like Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech, and the move would certainly strengthen Arsene Wenger’s side significantly in their quest to win the Premier League title this season.

Sanchez was Arsenal’s top scorer last season with 25 goals in all competitions, despite not playing up front, with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck not really looking up to scratch in that department with just 26 goals between them in 2014/15.

Benzema is a proven goalscorer and has been a big success in his time at the Bernabeu, and could surely take that form with him to English football.
