The season’s curtain raiser, the Charity Shield, kicks off at 3pm today with Arsenal and Chelsea hoping for an early advantage.
Chelsea are the defending league champions with their London rivals the current cup holders.
While too much won’t be read into the result, the advantage gained from picking up the first piece of silverware of the new season won’t be lost on either coach.
Last season Arsenal won the trophy, defeating Manchester City 3-0 and with an Asia Trophy victory in Singapore and the Emirates cup under their belt, they will be confident of striking an early blow.
The Gunners have already gained a marginal advantage with the capture if Petr Cech and the former Blues keeper is expected to make his competitive debut for the club on Sunday.
The Czech Republic star swapped blue for red over the summer and is set to be the new number one at the club this season, he is also so far the club’s only major capture.
That said there could still be plenty of new faces in the team on Sunday with the likes of Chuba Akpom, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Alex Iwobi all impressing in pre-season.
One man that won’t be on show is Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean forward is enjoying an extended break after helping his country to Copa America success.
Chelsea meanwhile have also been slow in adding to their squad with fringe players Nathan and Asmir Begovic joining Radamel Falcao as new captures.
Of the three, Falcao is the most likely starter especially with doubts over the fitness of Diego Costa.
The Spanish forward was taking off in the friendly win over Barcelona with a hamstring issue and could miss out. Also set to be absent is Gary Cahill.
The England defender suffered a broken nose in the same game and will miss out.
Community Shield Prediction: Arsenal 2, Chelsea 1
