World-class striker and Arsenal transfer target set for Serie A stay this summer

In-demand Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain is set to remain with the Serie A giants this summer, despite reports of him rejecting a new contract offer from the Italians earlier in the week.

According to Sky Italia there has been no contact from Barclays Premier League side Arsenal, who were interested in signing the 27-year-old from Real Madrid during the summer transfer window in 2013, but allowed him to join Gli Azzurri after pursuing a deal for Luis Suarez.

With manager Arsene Wenger reportedly in the transfer market in pursuit of a world-class striker to turn his current squad into genuine title challengers this season, it had been reported via various media outlets including Standard Sport that Higuain was on the Frenchman’s wish-list alongside Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski [via Telegraph Sport]

However, with fresh information that the Gunners boss is not interested in the Argentine international, it remains to be seen whether a new centre-forward will arrive at the Emirates Stadium before the transfer window closes next month.
