Chelsea agree personal terms with £17m Bundesliga star

Chelsea are closing in on the transfer of FC Ausgburg left-back Abdul Rahman Baba, according to the player’s agent.

The London Evening Standard, on Tuesday, suggested that the Premier League champions could be on the verge of clinching the signature of the Ghana international after reporting that the Bundesliga outfit had secured his replacement.

Augsburg completed the signing of Philipp Max in a €3.6 million deal from Karlsruher SC [via ESPN], and the 21-year-old is expected to fill the void left by Rahman’s now seemingly imminent Stamford Bridge departure, the Standard claim.

Rahman’s agent, Sascha Empacher, has since revealed that his client has agreed personal terms with Chelsea, and it is now a case of the two clubs settling on a fee:

“It is only the clubs that have to find an agreement,” he began, as quoted by the Express.

“On our side, we are agreed.”

Rahman could be the subject of a £17m bid, the Express report.

Cesar Azpilicueta is currently the undisputed first-choice left-back for Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese manager last month stating there is no better in this defensive position that the Spaniard.

“We sold Filipe. We have the best left-back in England – Azpilicueta,” the coach continued, as quoted by Sky Sports.

It is therefore likely that Baba, 21, will be limited in his first-team opportunities if he signs for the Blues, but with currently no back-up to Azpilicueta, his signing could be crucial for the season ahead.

Earlier in the summer, the Metro had reported that Manchester City were keen on the full-back, although it remains to be seen whether the Citizens will look to compete with the Pensioners for the defender’s signature.
