Manchester City ready to meet €40m release clause for WORLD-CLASS La Liga defender

Manchester City are willing to meet Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin‘s massive €40m release clause, according to reports in Spanish publication AS.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini is reportedly keen to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season as doubts over Eliaquim Mangala remain after he failed to justify his hefty price-tag following his £32million transfer from Porto last summer.

Meanwhile veteran Martin Demichelis turns 35 later this year and that enhances the Etihad Stadium outfit’s need to find a suitable partner for captain Vincent Kompany at the heart of the defence.

A move for Godin would certainly show that City mean business in their pursuit to reclaim the league title from Chelsea this season.

The 29-year-old Uruguayan international is regarded as one of the best defenders in European football at the moment and proved his quality for Atleti during the 2013-14 campaign as he scored a crucial goal against Barcelona to clinch the Spanish league title for the Madrid-based outfit.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone will certainly be desperate to retain the services of his defensive leader, however there will be little he can do if City activate his buy-out clause.
