Liverpool hope to make £15m Spanish international their eighth summer signing

Liverpool’s hopes of landing Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi have been given a boost with the Independent claiming that the Bernabeu boss Rafa Benitez doesn’t see the 25-year-old as part of his first-team plans.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers could do with extra quality in the centre of the park, and the Spanish midfielder would bring a strong tackling presence to the Northern Irishman’s squad.

Rodgers has seen Brazilian Lucas Leiva struggle with injuries in recent seasons, and pint-sized Welshman Joe Allen has been more miss than hit since his move to Merseyside in 2012.

Illarramendi has seen his first team chances restricted since the arrival of Toni Kroos last summer, the former Real Sociedad man making just ten La Liga starts, and the Independent claim that Liverpool are set to make a £15m bid for the tough tackler.

Brendan Rodgers has had a busy summer transfer window thus far, with the Liverpool manager bringing in free agents James Milner, Adam Bogdan and Danny Ings and forking out fees to bring in Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino, Nathaniel Clyne and Belgian forward Christian Benteke.

Liverpool have balanced the books with the big-money sale of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City, and have also sold Rickie Lambert to West Bromwich Albion, with the likes of Mario Balotelli (via the Daily Mirror) and Fabio Borini (via the Daily Star) also linked with moves away from the club this summer.
