Manchester United kicked off the new Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon and there was a very promising debut from summer signing Matteo Darmian.
The Red Devils were not at their best during the game at Old Trafford and were somewhat fortunate to claim all three points as they were gifted the winner thanks to a mistake from Spurs defender Kyle Walker, who turned the ball into his own net in the 22nd minute after attempting to dispossess Wayne Rooney.

United manager Louis van Gaal handed debuts to all five of his recruits over the summer as Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Sergio Romero were all named in the starting XI while Bastian Schweinsteiger came off the bench in the second half to a standing ovation, but it was the performance of Italian defender Darmian that pleased a number of the club’s supporters on Twitter.
Darmian will become a super rightback… defend wery well and look good going forward. #mufc

In Darmian I do believe we’ve finally replaced Gary Neville. — Phil ‘United’ (@PhilPassey99) August 8, 2015
If Darmian can be very consistent, he is going to be one of the best… Great debut!

Darmian probably most impressive – not just defending, but the ambition of his passing and movement in attack.

Very impressed by Darmian, looks like a proper right back. The difference was noticeable when he got subbed for Valencia #MUFC
