Chelsea linked with surprise £14.5m Dutch international raid

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is said to be interested in Newcastle United‘s summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum, according to the Daily Express.

Magpies boss Steve McClaren only brought in the 24-year-old attacking midfielder last month, and the Express states that the former England manager has ‘warned off’ Chelsea, with Mourinho said to be interested in the former PSV Eindhoven man.

McClaren has been heavily backed by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley this summer, with the north-east side spending £14.5 million to bring in Wijnaldum (via BBC Sport) as well as forking out for Anderlecht duo Aleksandar Mitrovic & Chancel Mbemba.

Wijnaldum helped PSV Eindhoven to an Eredivisie title last season, ending Ajax’s run of domination, with the cultured attacking midfielder scoring 18 goals in all competitions. He dovetailed superbly with United new boy Memphis Depay, and will bring a driving presence to Newcastle’s midfield-should he remain at the club.

The Rotterdam-born playmaker is a regular in Danny Blind’s Dutch national team set-up and was part of Louis van Gaal’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Blues to sign €63m star in time for Man City v Chelsea game next week

Mourinho saw his Chelsea side drop points at home to Swansea City on the opening day of the new season and the Blues boss hasn’t been all that active in the transfer market this summer.

Indeed, Mourinho has raised concerns about his side’s inactivity (via the Daily Mirror) having only brought in Radamel Falcao on a loan deal and signed Asmir Begovic from Stoke City thus far during the window.

Following his side’s failure to beat Swansea, the Portuguese coach may again turn to the market in order to bring in reinforcements.
