Chelsea appeal Thibaut Courtois’ opening day red card; Blues want goalkeeper available for Manchester City clash

Chelsea have launched an appeal against the red card shown to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois during their 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the opening weekend of the new Barclays Premier League season.

Courtois was sent off early in the second half at Stamford Bridge following the concession of a penalty for a foul on Bafetimbi Gomis in the area and was adjudged to have denied the Swans forward a clear goalscoring opportunity.

However, according to The Times journalist Rory Smith, who broke the news via his official Twitter account on Monday afternoon, the Blues are hoping that the Belgian’s dismissal is rescinded in hopes of having him available for their huge clash against fellow title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

Should their appeal prove to be unsuccessful then summer signing Asmir Begovic is likely to be handed his full league debut for the club after coming on as a substitute against the Swans.
