Liverpool transfer news: international defender wanted by European giants

Posted by

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is said to have been the subject of a loan bid from Serie A giants AS Roma as the summer transfer window nears its climax, according to talkSPORT.

The French international did not start the Reds’ first game of the Premier League season away to Stoke City, and it may be that he is now out of favour under manager Brendan Rodgers.

The 25-year-old has not always reached top form since moving from Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool in the summer of 2013, looking inconsistent and somewhat off the pace of the English game.

Still, Liverpool do not have a great deal of depth in that position and may be unwise to allow a player of Sakho’s calibre and experience to leave Anfield, with the club needing all the help they can get to climb back into the top four this season.

Roma insist they only want Sakho for one season, talkSPORT say, citing sources in France, so it could still leave Sakho’s future in England open, allowing him to return to Anfield after a full season playing regular first-team football.

Having only made sixteen appearances last term, Sakho could improve if used week in, week out by his club, and could return to Merseyside as a better player if all goes well for him at Roma. However, should he depart, Rodgers would likely need to reinforce his central-defensive options.
