REVEALED: Chelsea won race to sign Pedro as “Manchester United fell asleep”, says agent

Manchester United have only themselves to blame after losing out to reigning Premier League champions Chelsea for the signing of Spanish winger Pedro.

According to a spokesman for the agency that represents the 28-year-old, the Red Devils were indecisive about triggering the player’s release clause and that allowed the Blues to swoop in and wrap up a deal, which was confirmed on Thursday:

“Maybe Manchester United fell asleep,” Antonio Sanz told Radio Club Tenerife [via Goal].

“The negotiation with Chelsea was like a lightning bolt.”

“It is common knowledge that United were in the bidding for Pedro, but Chelsea were faster and within 24 hours reached an agreement with the club. It was a whirlwind,” he added.

United had looked in pole position to land the winger from Liga BBVA giants Barcelona after it was reported earlier in the week that chief executive Ed Woodward had flown out to Spain to seal the deal, however, the Blues sensationally hijacked the transfer.

Pedro became the fourth major arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer after Radamel Falcao, Asmir Begovic and Abdul Baba Rahman as manager Jose Mourinho looks to freshen up his squad in the hope of retaining the league title and going the distance in Europe this season.
