Emirates Stadium side ready to dig deep for forward.

Arsenal are ready to spend a club record £48m to land Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema according to the Daily Star.

Arsene Wenger has long been an admirer of 27-year-old striker Benzema and could well do with adding a prolific forward to his Gunners squad before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Benzema has netted 133 goals in six seasons in the Spanish capital but the arrival of Rafa Benitez as Real Madrid’s new manager could impact on his role in the starting eleven.

Reports suggest that Benitez may be open to using Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale in a central striking role, so as to accommodate James Rodriguez, and this would leave Benzema’s chances restricted.

Arsenal have made just one high-profile signing this summer, that being Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, and Wenger has seen his side start the Premier League campaign in average fashion with a home defeat to West Ham followed by a narrow win away at Crystal Palace.
