On Tuesday it was reported that Everton centre-back John Stones had handed in a transfer request before the afternoon’s training session in an attempt to force through a transfer to reigning English champions Chelsea before the close of the summer window next Tuesday.
Chelsea have had three bids turned down for the England international – £20m, £26m and £30m – and following the news of his transfer request, they are likely to return with a fourth bid that could be near the £40m mark – and therefore a British record fee for a defender.
There was great shock, therefore, when Roberto Martinez, the Everton manager, started Stones in their Capital One Cup tie against Barnsley only 24 hours after he had informed the Toffees of his wish to leave Merseyside this summer.
Inevitably, despite receiving a good reception from the majority of Everton supporters at Oakwell, there was a small section of fans who haven’t taken too kindly to the actions of their star youngster, with such vile abuse as “”F*** off Stones, you rat,” shouted out as he walked to the dressing room tunnel at full time, the Mirror reported.

And it seems it didn’t end there; as a smattering of Evertonians took to social media to claim that they had bumped into Stones and his team-mate Steven Naismith at a service station hours after the match, and reduced the youngster to tears.
According to their posts, the fans quizzed Stones over the truth in his transfer request, and while the 21-year-old refused to provide any answers, the questions apparently saw him walk away tearful.
Just seen Stones in the services there, everyone asking him whats happened and hes started crying. Madness.

Mate was in the services with Stones. He said: ‘We know it’s the board and not you’. He started crying and was pulled away by Naismith.

Makes no sense why a player is not aloud to answer a simple question about a transfer request? #johnstones

@PaulDaly90 yes and he wouldn’t answer. Started crying and walked away. Naismith then said he’s not aloud to say
