Arsenal: Arsene Wenger ‘working on’ transfer swoop as £44m striker rumours swirl

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has admitted that his side are ‘working on’ a transfer deal and remain ‘optimistic’ of securing another player before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Gunners’ 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, the French coach revealed that his side are keen to add to their ranks.

We are out there and working on it and I’m optimistic,” the Alsace-born manager began [as per the Independent], “this kind of thing is very difficult to predict.”

To date, Arsenal have not been particularly active in the window, with Petr Cech—who endured a horror debut against West Ham United—becoming the only notable arrival when he swapped Chelsea for the  Emirates Stadium.

A long-term pursuit of Karim Benzema [Express] appeared to end when the player posted a recent tweet reaffirming his affection for current employers Real Madrid.

However, various transfer targets remain for Wenger, who may well be considering an upgrade on Olivier Giroud, the French striker who lost his place to the unconvincing Theo Walcott for Saturday’s victory over Newcastle.

The 28-year-old—valued at £44 million by the French champions, according to the Metro—is understood to favour an exit from the French capital [again via the Metro].
