Chelsea make ‘transfer enquiry’ over top Manchester United target and John Stones alternative

Chelsea have made an enquiry over the availability of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back and Manchester United target Marquinhos.

The report comes from French news outlet RMC, who claim that the Blues are planning on hijacking the Red Devils’ move for the Brazil international, and could therefore be considering a late offer before the close of the summer window in three days time.

However, RMC state that while PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi confirmed that an enquiry from Chelsea over Marquinhos had been made on Saturday, he told the reigning English champions: “don’t even bother making an offer”.

Marquinhos has long been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, with reports back in April even claiming that personal terms had been agreed; however, Louis van Gaal, the United manager, is yet to cement his interest with an official offer.

Chelsea meanwhile remain in the market for defensive acquisitions, as despite Everton’s John Stones having handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Stamford Bridge, the Toffees are standing firm and will refuse to grant the youngster an exit.

The form of the Blues’ defence has been worrying since the start of the new season, with Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta having all been susceptible for the nine goals that they have conceded in just four games.

There is certainly a cry for changes in the Chelsea camp, but whether spending the cash would be the correct call – that remains to be seen.
