Anthony Martial‘s deadline day transfer to Manchester United might have come as a surprise to many, but it’s emerged that wonderkid had been scouted for 12 months according to reports in the Manchester Evening News.

The 19-year-old joined the Red Devils for an initial fee of £36million and that figure could rise to as much as £58million depending on what clauses have been agreed on in the deal with Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco [via BBC Sport].

Martial had been linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League for the majority of the summer transfer window, but it appeared a switch to Tottenham was on the cards until United swooped in with an extraordinary offer for the teenager.

The fee has been a much talked about subject among fans from rivals club and also in the media since it was announced, however, United manager Louis van Gaal’s assistant Ryan Giggs reportedly scouted the Frenchman for a year and the club moved fast for his signature due to fears of missing out to a number of leading clubs in Europe including Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
