Manchester United star in contract U-turn despite Real Madrid links

Manchester United star David De Gea is set to sign a new deal with the club despite Real Madrid‘s interest, reports AS [via Daily Express].

The 24-year-old was heavily linked to the Bernabeu over the summer, and even came within hours of completing a move to the Liga BBVA club. It was only the two clubs failing to get the necessary paperwork in on time that ended the chances of a transfer [BBC]. They have since blamed each other for this [Utd official website and Real official site], and it is unclear who is to blame.

Despite the transfer saga, the Spain international has been named as a part of the Red Devils’ Champions League squad. He could also now sign a contract extension with the club, in a sensational turnaround.

The former Atletico Madrid man’s current deal ends next summer, when it was rumoured that Los Merengues would sign him for free [Daily Star].

If he signs on at Old Trafford it would scupper that move, and end his chances of the rumoured [Daily Star] £10 million signing-on fee that Los Blancos are offering him to wait for them. However, should the goalkeeper stay with United it could bolster his chances of returning to first-team action, which is especially important with Euro 2016 at the end of the season.
