Wayne Rooney created history against San Marino this evening as he scored from the penalty spot to give England the lead and more importantly equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals for the national team.
The Three Lions skipper has not been at his best for Manchester United at the start of the new season as he’s failed to find the net in the Barclays Premier League, with his only goals coming in the UEFA Champions League second leg playoff tie against Club Brugge last month.
However, Rooney would have fancied his chances of equalling the record of Charlton’s, which had stood for over four decades, ahead of the game against the international minnows and wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet by converting a penalty in the 13th minute.

His hopes of scoring his 50th goal in England colours were dashed when manager Roy Hodgson decided to withdraw him with the result in the bag, but there has been a huge reaction for his first-half accomplishment on Twitter:

I used to see Gary Lineker as the greatest English footballer, then Michael Owen, now Wayne Rooney for me is the greatest ever!

Wayne Rooney can’t even get the two goals he needs against San Marino. Emile Heskey would have got the 50 tonight alone.
