Three points. That’s all Wales need. Three simple points.
If they get them on Sunday they will make history, securing their place in a first major tournament since 1958.
On Thursday a bullet-like header from Gareth Bale, reminiscent of the great John Charles, secured a 1-0 win over Cyprus. That moved the Welsh onto 17 points, achieved through 5 wins and 2 draws.
It is measure of the work being done by Chris Coleman and his team that the tiny country has risen from 117 in the world in January 2011 to their current position of 9th.
A win on Sunday would see them climb into the top four, ahead of Chile, Brazil and Colombia and they could climb as high as second place in the world if Belgium fail to beat Cyprus and Germany lose or draw with Scotland. Heady days for Coleman and Co.
While world rankings are nice, championships are better and that will be focus later today.
Coleman admitted in the build up to the game that he was likely to stick with the same side that won 1-0 in Nicosia, telling reporters “The players are honest,” he said. “If they feel like they’ve got a problem then they won’t start.
“Physically we’ll look at our starting 11 and of course we’ll pick our strongest 11.
“But the guys who started out there in Cyprus did a great job and showed great discipline. They stuck to the challenge and the game-plan. So we have got the option if we want to mix it up but we can also do that within the game. But physically the lads are OK.”
Joe Ledley will miss Sunday’s clash because of a hamstring injury with Nottingham Forest’s David Vaughan replacing him while West Brom defender James Chester is expected to be passed fit following a slight hamstring strain.
