Messi’s partner, Antonella Roccuzzo, gave birth to the baby boy on Friday, as Messi became a father for the second time.
During much of Saturday, there was near-incessant social media speculation about the baby’s name doing the rounds, with many sources purporting insider knowledge that the newborn was to be called Benjamin.
That, incidentally, was the name given by Messi’s international teammate Sergio Aguero to his son, the grandson of Argentina legend Diego Maradona.
LioneHowever, Messi’s brother Matias took to Twitter on Saturday to confirm that Messi and his partner finally opted for the name Mateo.
