Ryan Giggs’ wait to become Manchester United manager may have to go on a little longer, with surprise news that current boss Louis van Gaal is set to sign a new contract.

The former Netherlands boss is enjoying life in charge of the Red Devils, and is family are settled in Manchester, putting his plans to retire in 2017 on hold.

Van Gaal is expected to discuss the details of the new deal around the new year, according to the Daily Star, in a decision that could get a mixed reaction from the club’s fans.

United have not played particularly exciting football since LVG took over, despite the Dutchman spending huge amounts in the transfer market, largely on failed players.

Giggs has been tipped by Van Gaal as his replacement, with the Welshman currently serving as assistant manager at Old Trafford.
