A rejuvenated Roger Federer will bid to gain revenge for his Wimbledon final defeat when he takes on Novak Djokvic in the US open final at Flushing Meadows later tonight.
The Swiss world number 2 beat fellow country Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 to reach his first US open title since 2009.
The Five time US open winner has being a losing semi-finalist three times since he failed to make it 6 in a row against Juan Martin del Potro.
Federer has already lost to Djokovic in a major final this year, going down in four sets to the world number one.
The pair have met on 41 previous occasions with Federer just edging their head to head record with 21 wins to his rivals 20.
Their most recent clash was in the Cincinnati Masters where Federer prevailed in straight sets to win, and despite having a healthy respect for the Serbian, the 34 year old is once again up for the challenge of stopping the 9 time major winner.
“Novak has had a tremendous year,” said the 17-time Grand Slam champion. “There’s always a lot on the line when we play.
“He’s the best mover on the hard courts, he’s tough mentally, but I like that challenge and I’ll be ready for it.”
Djokovic has already won two majors this season following success in the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while he also lost in the French Open final.
The top seed was at his ruthless best in the semi-final as he thrashed the 2014 winner Marin Cilic 6-0 6-1 6-2.
Looking ahead to his clash with Federer and the final itself, Djokovic was very calm and composed.
“I’m used to all the expectations and pressure,” Djokovic said. “It’s part of what I do. I try to deal with those emotions on and off the court, and the experience of being out there and competing at the highest level for the biggest trophies has helped me reach that level again.
Hopefully it’s going to help me to handle myself well on Sunday.”
