Louis van Gaal hints at substitute role in Champions League opener for £36m Manchester United wonderkid

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he hasn’t decided whether to hand summer signing Anthony Martial a full debut against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils begin their UEFA Champions League campaign against the defending Eredivisie champions at the Phillips Stadion and the 19-year-old is pushing for a start after making an immediate impact on his first appearance for the club at the weekend.

Martial, who joined United for £36million on transfer deadline day earlier in the month, announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful in the best possible fashion by netting against bitter rivals Liverpool.

The former AS Monaco forward was on the pitch for less than 20 minutes before he weaved his way into the area and found the net with a composed finish to open his account for the Red Devils.

However, his exploits may not be enough to see him start the game in the Netherlands as van Gaal remains keen to slowly introduce the teenager into the team:

“I’ve only had one training session after the [Liverpool] match. His impression is good, but you have to give him time,” the Dutchman said [via Sky Sports]
