Manchester United star claims they have ‘a lot to learn’

Manchester United star Chris Smalling believes that the side have ‘a lot to ear’ after their defeat to PSV Eindhoven, reports the Daily Star.

The Red Devils lost the opening game of their Champions League group stage campaign 2-1, despite earlier going a goal ahead. Memphis Depay’s early strike wasn’t enough, as Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh both hit the back of the net for the Eredivisie champions.

“We scored a really good goal and then we couldn’t kick on from that,” the centre-back said, “We’ve got a lot to learn to make sure we bounce back on Sunday.

“You can’t take anything for granted, whether that’s a league game, a cup game or a Champions League game. If you don’t take your chances and the other team take theirs then we’ll be well and truly punished.”

This result has added to the disappointment around United’s poor start to the season. Louis van Gaal’s side have lost to Swansea City and drawn with Newcastle United, leaving them five points behind Premier League leaders and fierce rivals Manchester City. Even with their big spending over the last two years, the Old Trafford outfit look likely to be well off the pace in the title race.

Up next for Man Utd is a tough game away against Southampton. It will be a return to the St. Mary’s stadium for Morgan Schneiderlin, who left for United in the summer. A win could be vital to stop the Citizens from getting even further away at the top of the table.
