Its been a difficult few weeks for Liverpool’s Brendan Rogers as he takes his side to France to take on Willy Sagnol’s Bordeaux in tonight’s crunch tie from the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, with the pressure starting to build on the Reds boss.
After a decent start to this year’s Premier League season the wheels have started to come off, with the Reds suffering a humiliating home defeat to West Ham, and then facing the indignation of a thumping by Manchester Utd at Old Trafford last weekend.
It’s safe to say that Liverpool put in an instantly forgettable performance against their arch rivals, the only shining light a spectacular overhead kick from Christian Benteke, it was made abundantly clear that Phillipe Coutinho is a definite loss to the creativity in the centre of the park.
The Reds are definitely a wounded animal at the moment and their cause is not helped tonight with Rogers fielding a weakened side, with Christian Benteke, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Lucas Leiva all not making the trip to France.
Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure should come in at the back, both making their first appearances of the season, while Coutinho should return in midfield following his recent suspension, while Danny Ings should come in for Christian Benteke.
Whether the Europa League appeals to Rogers at the moment is unclear, although it is apparent with the changes in the side that the Reds’ performances in the Premier League over the next fortnight are of utmost importance, if not only for the managers survival.
It is clear the Brendan Rogers is putting all the emphasis on a key home match with Norwich on Sunday, followed by a visit by Aston Villa on the 26th, two games in which the Liverpool faithful will be expecting maximum points, and any slip ups would clearly put the pressure back on the Northern Irishman.
Their opponents Bordeaux have made a slow if not steady start to life in Ligue 1, unbeaten in four out of their first five games, but only winning once against Nantes.
Elswehere Celtic face a difficult ask at the Amsterdam Arena as they take on Ajax. Once again, its been a difficult few weeks for manager Ronny Deila and his side, who disappointingly missed out on the Champions League group stages with a 4-3 aggregate loss to Malmo in qualifying.
A loss to Aberdeen on the weekend also rustled a few feathers, but there’s little doubt that Ajax boss Ronald De Boer will be looking for maximum points this evening. His side has won four out of the last five in Eredivisie, scoring 14 goals and they should prove a significant test for the Bhoys.
With a Champions League place up for the winner of this year’s Europa League, there’s certainly plenty to play for in this year’s competition. Don’t miss a kick.
