Manchester United & Liverpool on ALERT to the availability of Dutch left-back

Manchester United and Liverpool are poised to go head-to-head for the signing of PSV Eindhoven defender Jetro Willems, according to media reports.

Dutch media outlet Eindhovens Dagblad [via talkSPORT] claim the 21-year-old is stalling on a new deal with the reigning Eredivisie champions and that could force the club into selling him for a cut-price deal next summer, which has reportedly alerted the two Premier League giants.

United are likely to be in the transfer market as they seek cover for Luke Shaw, who sustained a broken leg when the two teams met at the Philips Stadion in the Champions League earlier in the week, and are said to be keeping tabs on Willems.

However, they are likely to face strong competition from their bitter rivals as Reds manager Brendan Rodgers looks to finally solve the left-back role which has so far proven to be a problem position since his appointment in the summer of 2012.

Youngster Joe Gomez has been used there since his arrival from Charlton Athletic as Spanish duo Jose Enrique and Alberto Moreno have failed to fully convince that they are long-term solutions and that could lead to Rodgers making an offer for Willems, who is reportedly open to a switch to England in the near future.
