Liverpool legend backs manager Brendan Rodgers to oversee improvement in results before Christmas

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson insists manager Brendan Rodgers deserves more time to prove he is capable of delivering success for the club.

The Northern Irishman has come in for criticism from a number of the club’s supporters following their difficult start to the new season, which has seen them win just two of their first six games and score just three times.

Following a shock 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham United before the international break, the Reds produced a disappointing performance in the loss at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend and that piled on the pressure for Rodgers afterwards.

However, Thompson has come to the defence of Rodgers and pleaded for fans to get behind him at least until the Christmas period, where he expects results and performances to improve:

“I believe he deserves more time,” the former Reds defender told Sky Sports.

“You can’t let the man spend all that money and bring all those players in and then five, six or seven games in he has to move on.”

“That decision can only be determined on results and he has to turn round the flow.”

“I believe he should be given the opportunity to see it through, but the bells will be ringing by Christmas time if fortunes have not turned round. I don’t need to tell Brendan that, he will understand that, but results have to pick up,” Thompson stressed.
