Ex-Man United boss Alex Ferguson reveals he tried to sign former Liverpool star Fernando Torres

Fergie reveals how he nearly landed surprise Torres deal.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson nearly signed Fernando Torres when he was still only 16 years old, he has revealed in his latest book.

The Scot labelled former Liverpool man Torres as one of the biggest blunders in the transfer market that he’d come across in his Premier League career, referring to his £50m switch from Anfield to Chelsea in 2011.

One of the most expensive signings in history, Torres never produced his best form in a Chelsea shirt, though his fine form in his early Liverpool career suggests he could have been a great buy if United had landed him as a youngster.

Quoted in the Daily Express, Ferguson said: “Even [my] very worst are not in the same postal code as some of the biggest blunders in the Premier League. Such as the £50million that Chelsea impulsively paid for Fernando Torres.”
