Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he had some serious doubts about Santi Cazorla and took a huge gamble to sign him, according to the Daily Express.
Cazorla has been a monumental success since arriving from Malaga in 2012, notching up 32 assists – more than any other player over the same timeframe (via Express).
However, Wenger has admitted that he had no idea at the time how Cazorla would take to Premier League football, but his overall ability convinced him that the Spaniard was worth the gamble.
“You could question whether he was physically equipped to play in the tough Premier League. It’s true that I had that doubt, but his quality was so big that I was ready to take that gamble,” the 65-year-old told the official Arsenal website.
“His technical quality, his right foot, left foot, his availability, his vision and the quality of his passing made me go for it. He’s a fantastic example that no matter how tall you are, it’s about how good you are.”
Cazorla has featured both on the wing and in the centre for The Gunners, but Wenger has confirmed that he will aim to use him more often through the middle as his experience and vision will be greater assets.
“He’s at an age where he has experience and where it’s a bit more difficult on the flanks. His technical quality, vision and experience are very important central.”
