Jose Mourinho critical of benched Eden Hazard after Chelsea 2-0 win over Aston Villa

Eden Hazard had apparently worn out his welcome on the Chelsea starting XI prior to their 2-0 win over Aston Villa, and Jose Mourinho made sure to point out that no one is safe from the bench when the team loses.

In his post game interview reported by the Metro, Mourinho stated that his decision to bench the reigning Premier League Player of the Season stemmed from their inability to prevent scoring and hopes that the benching would motivate Hazard to play better.

“I left out Hazard because we are conceding a lot of goals,” Mourinho said.

“We need to defend better… I will continue that way or he (Hazard) comes in our direction and tries to play that way.”

Hazard has been held without a single goal for Chelsea in any competition. His only scoring this year has come with Belgium in Euro 2016 qualifying matches.

The 2-0 win over Aston Villa was Chelsea’s third win of the season and only their second where they allowed fewer than two goals.

Chelsea still has a lot of ground to cover on the table with top contenders Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all recording wins this week, but 11th is a lot closer to the top than 16th.
